This book doesn’t set out to confirm anything the reader hasn’t already suspected—but it does so from an unexpected angle. What is a diary when it exceeds its own form? And what is a novel when it resists being one? It is not an intimate diary, though it contains confessions. Nor is it an essay, though it thinks with precision. It is a gesture of writing—of persistence, of inquiry. Diario inútil is not a book to be read straight through; it is something to be traversed—like navigating a city without a map. It is yet another attempt to capture what happens in the very moment it unfolds. A belated record of uninvited thoughts, fleeting scenes, human bewilderments, and convictions that unravel by the first paragraph. There is no linear journey, only movement. No moral, but echoes. Ricardo Añez Montiel does not write to please or to dazzle. He writes like someone circling around something that cannot be fully named, yet insists on being present. And what if the point is not to arrive, but to linger at the margins? At times, something seems about to begin. As if, on the next page, the text will find a recognizable shape, a clear direction. But it doesn’t. The diary persists. It advances, recedes, stalls, disperses. It seeps into the crevices of the everyday: a domestic argument, a taxi ride, a wait at the hospital, a trip to the cinema. And what if the extraordinary resided precisely in the unnoticed? Nothing happens—and everything happens. The narrative voice offers no answers, nor does it seek them. It observes. And in observing, it proposes another way of inhabiting time. This book resists classification. It shifts registers, tests paths, moves with the freedom—illusory or not—of a personal diary and the intuition that any novel today might be anything. Diario inútil makes no effort to conform—nor does it need to. It moves across the surface of the everyday like someone digging, allowing what is fragmentary, unexpected, and seemingly minor to reveal a deeper resonance. Caracas, 2010. The revolutionary government exploits the energy crisis to decree power outages that, for hours, black out the entire country. During these periods of time, Venezuela seems to regress in history to a new Stone Age that seeps through every crack. Amidst this atmosphere, two friends, a frustrated writer and a psychiatrist accustomed to getting involved in the lives of his patients, discuss a series of crimes that have occurred in the last year. Pedro Álamo, another character in this polyphonic novel, obsessively searches through word games—those he creates and those dreamed up by his admired Darío Lancini—for the key to understanding the unhinged world he lives in. It's as if he were seeking to transform reality into something different by changing the order of its constituent elements, thus trying to find its exact meaning. Literature, rock, dreams, violence, politics, love, absences, and fears intertwine in the minds of the protagonists. They open labyrinths, create crossroads, and produce vital short circuits. Sere is a journalist from Caracas who leaves her job to open a restaurant in Santa Monica. Olga is an old friend living in exile in London. Two men in uniform flee through a tangled jungle. They are deserters. They are lovers. Lovers fleeing toward freedom as they enter each other's prison. A first image as paradoxical as the fact that man can make time move forward by delving into the past. Men who are seen as "insects," according to the glossary of the revolution of Papá H, as Pablo Hacha is known, leader of a totalitarian tyranny in an imaginary country, but so real that it could be located at any corner of the world where the thirst for power stopped time and, with it, all vestiges of progress, all individual freedom, all sense of humanity. With this scene, Manuel Gerardo Sánchez begins The Stir of Insects, his first novel. There, his characters move within a framework where man's most savage instincts are unleashed—once all traces of those civilizing fictions that sustain life in society have collapsed, giving way to his most primitive nature. With a tone that, at times, plunges into the parody, the author shows these lovers who symbolize the two most despicable sins for militaristic fanaticism: homosexuality and betrayal of the cause, which is the betrayal of a religion in which a man acts as God and paradise ends up converted into hell. A woman travels to France to seek family roots in a small town, which will allow her to obtain a foreign passport to escape Venezuela; another visits the Museum of Innocence in Istanbul and, upon seeing the objects that recount the lives in a novel by Orhan Pamuk, revisits in her memory the many objects left behind, which populated the journeys of her own life; three Venezuelan siblings, each living in a different country, must reunite in Germany to sow their father's ashes; a "sudaca and weirdo" migrant in Spain attempts to replicate Caracas on Madrid. These stories of migration, by Silda Cordoliani, Raquel Rivas Rojas, Alberto Barrera Tyszka, and Lena Yau, are just a brief sample of the short story collection Escribir Fuera: Cuentos de intemperies y querencias complied and edited by Raquel Rivas Rojas, Katie Brown, and Liliana Lara, which has just been published in 2021, thanks to the enthusiastic work of these three authors and the successful venture of David Alejandro Malavé, head of Kálathos, a Venezuelan publishing house in Spain. Everything takes place on a border, the one that separates the eastern mountain range from the western one. Angustias Romero flees the plague with her husband and two children strapped to her back. The seven-month-old twins die on the journey, and after packing them into shoeboxes, the couple heads off to bury them in El Tercer País, the illegal cemetery run by the legendary Visitación Salazar. Abandoned by her husband, Angustias will fight alongside the gravedigger against a hostile environment, where the only law is dictated by those with weapons, where time is marked by fish, parties, and mysterious toys left on children's graves, while danger and violence escalate until the last minute, blurring the boundaries between life and death.

An experimental book that, through autofiction and other literary mechanisms, explores the ruin and deterioration of a revolutionary experiment in Venezuela, reactivating another form of utopian desire. Juan Cristóbal Castro writes Arqueología sonámbula (Sleepwalking Archeology), a necessary text, an amphibious animal that traces the history of the last twenty years in Venezuela. Its central axis is the ruin as a material and symbolic record of the country's deterioration and crisis, as well as a repressed dream residue that returns in the protagonist's intimate and familial history. Through a combination of discursive repertoires such as notes, narratives, theoretical quotations, photographs, critical arguments, historical archives, and footnotes, Castro assembles a narrative and conceptual artifact that destabilizes each of these forms and weaves a web of unexpected connections between the materiality of the ruin, theoretical reflections on the remainder and spectrality, the political and social situation in Venezuela, the character's private and emotional life, and a surprising library of Venezuelan history, literature, culture, and art. This book enters and leaves the country through a unique and novel literary strategy that combines historical and theoretical rigor with an emotional and sensitive dimension that reveals other possible readings of the Venezuelan conflict.
