While this may be obvious in European literature, the theme becomes more complex in Latin American fiction, where novels of the time not only reflect bourgeois desires but also that same class’s ambition to participate in the foundational projects of their respective nations. In other words, from the outset—and far from operating in separate spheres—desire and nation (or desire before the nation, or desire against the nation) are inextricably bound in a remarkable and only seemingly contradictory relationship.</p> <p>Drawing on a meticulous study of novels and visual representations published in Venezuela at the end of the nineteenth and the beginning of the twentieth century, Nathalie Bouzaglo confronts this apparent contradiction with admirable subtlety in a book whose conclusions offer new ways of rethinking the continent’s literature as a whole. Far from being a mere anecdotal element, a narrative device of minor consequence, adultery—Bouzaglo proposes—takes on an investigative potential. The fundamental objective of this research is to analyze Solitude as a category represented through emptiness, silence, and violence, resulting in isolation, and the outcome is realized in the grotesque and the eschatological. As a methodological reference, psychoanalysis addresses the theme of solitude as an element that influences human social behavior and considers four points of tension: anxiety in the face of death, the scourged and lacerated body, the precariousness of time, and love as a structure of possession, taking into account the need to apply Comparative Theater in a space where boundaries are erased. The theatrical poetics considered are replete with anxiety and absurdity as tools to try to escape a labyrinthine prison, but ultimately arrive at the starting point: the recognition of the solitude of its characters. In this way, the theme of Latin American theatre and, in particular, Venezuelan dramaturgy is enriched, which culminates in the incorporation of a particular way of bringing the work to the stage from the UNET Experimental Theatre Group and its constant gestural experimentation.
