Juan Cristóbal Castro writes Arqueología sonámbula (Sleepwalking Archeology), a necessary text, an amphibious animal that traces the history of the last twenty years in Venezuela. Its central axis is the ruin as a material and symbolic record of the country's deterioration and crisis, as well as a repressed dream residue that returns in the protagonist's intimate and familial history. Through a combination of discursive repertoires such as notes, narratives, theoretical quotations, photographs, critical arguments, historical archives, and footnotes, Castro assembles a narrative and conceptual artifact that destabilizes each of these forms and weaves a web of unexpected connections between the materiality of the ruin, theoretical reflections on the remainder and spectrality, the political and social situation in Venezuela, the character's private and emotional life, and a surprising library of Venezuelan history, literature, culture, and art.
