The collapse of communications and the widespread failure of technology rumors surrounding what happened on the other side of the world discouraging and distressing. The information (fragmentary, contradictory, speculative) ventures abject hypotheses. The first verified news is that a cataclysm has occurred. Days later, the impossible is confirmed: the capital of Portugal has been devastated. News of the tragedy reinforces the unease of a Venezuela ruined and debased by militarism. Amid the chaos, collective depression, lack of information, and the (legitimate) fear of an imminent apocalypse, a high school teacher tries to maintain his students' interest in the arts, life, and freedom. "Lisbon Syndrome" is a metaphor for the destruction of the world; the contrast between the physical disappearance of one country and the moral collapse of another. The novel is the failed (but tireless) epic of Venezuelan students suffocated by tyranny and a romantic dialogue with Portuguese literature, through the melancholic and endearing figure of old Moreira.
